Wesley Street Release Paths

Wesley Street is a Jackson County jail building operated by the Jackson County Office of the Sheriff. It is not a Michigan Department of Corrections prison. The county has used the downtown complex for both sentenced and unsentenced people, including misdemeanants and people facing felony matters. A person may leave after bond is posted, a court dismisses the case, a sentence is served, or another court-authorized event ends the jail hold. Yet the same person may leave the building without leaving custody.

A transfer may lead to Jackson County Jail Chanter Road, another county, MDOC intake, or another lawful authority. The recorded destination matters. Ask for the time and manner of discharge, the release or movement code, and the receiving agency if the sheriff keeps that field. A code marked as a release can describe the end of the Wesley booking episode while another agency immediately assumes custody. The durable local chain is the sheriff discharge entry followed by the court order or disposition.

Confirm a Wesley Street Release

The sheriff does not publish a verified historical recent-release feed for Jackson County, Michigan. Its visitation material also says staff do not give a future “out date” to the public. For a release that has already occurred, use the completed record rather than trying to infer an outcome from roster absence. Every adult criminal matter begins in Jackson’s 12th District Court. Misdemeanors stay there, while a felony disposition moves to 4th Circuit Court. A district docket can hold the early bond and preliminary events even when the final felony judgment is in circuit court. Wesley Street Discharge Records

Michigan law requires a jail calendar with the prisoner’s identifying and commitment details plus the time and manner of discharge. For Wesley Street, that underlying entry is more useful than a simple answer that someone is “gone.” A focused request should seek the booking sheet and custody history, commitment authority and date, final release or movement date and time, manner or reason code, destination or receiving agency, and the code legend used at the time.

The jail-calendar requirement in MCL 801.4 supports a request for the existing discharge entry. Michigan FOIA requires production of existing public records, subject to exemptions. It does not require the sheriff to create a new explanation. Describing the exact fields makes the request easier to identify and reduces the risk of receiving only a current-status response.

Wesley Street Records Contact

The jail and the Records Division share the Wesley Street address but serve different tasks. The booking desk is the practical current-status contact. Sheriff Records handles the public-record request for a completed booking and discharge entry. Official county pages list different general business-hour windows for Sheriff Records, one from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and another from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., so confirm before visiting.

Requests may begin through the county’s FOIA request page. Ask for electronic delivery and an estimate before costs exceed a chosen limit. Charges can depend on search, redaction, copying, media, and mailing work. A narrow date range and a known booking number help identify the record without asking the county to research an open-ended question.

Wesley Street Jail History

The downtown jail’s history helps explain why a building name alone is not a custody result. The county says Wesley Street dates to 1953, expanded in 1978, and was renovated and expanded again in 2004. Its history describes a 200-bed complex. Chanter Road was later created as a direct-supervision, lower-security facility intended to reduce boarding outside the county and free room at Wesley.

Those two sites form parts of one county jail operation. Movement between them is internal placement, not a release into the community. A person first booked downtown may later be housed at Chanter without a new court result. Likewise, a person can return to Wesley for processing or another operational reason. For that reason, ask about Jackson County custody as a whole and request the final destination field.

A Jackson address does not make an MDOC institution part of the sheriff’s jail, and the sheriff’s release record is not the record of a state-prison gate release.

Wesley Release Court Checks

The court record and the jail record answer different questions. A bond order, dismissal, or time-served judgment supplies legal authority for release. The sheriff’s discharge entry shows when jail staff completed the custody movement. Processing can create a gap between those events. A certified order is best when the exact legal disposition matters, but it may not show the minute the person left the jail.

Start with 12th District Court for misdemeanors, bond events, and preliminary felony proceedings. Use 4th Circuit Court for the final felony judgment and later circuit events. Ask for the Register of Actions, judgment or amended judgment, bond or release order, probation order, dismissal, or commitment as relevant. Note: A later set-aside changes treatment of an eligible conviction; it is not the physical Wesley Street release event.

After a Wesley Street Transfer

If the court committed the person to MDOC, allow for intake processing and then search the official Offender Tracking Information System. Read Current Status and Assigned Location together. “Prisoner” with an institution indicates state confinement. “Parolee” means the person has left prison but remains under state supervision. “Discharged” means the MDOC supervision term has ended.

A move to Chanter Road remains within the county jail system. Another county or federal authority requires that agency’s record. MI-VINE can report a custody event, but “released” should be read with the contributor and any receiving agency. The result to establish is not merely that someone left Wesley Street. It is whether the person left all custody, entered supervised release, or continued in another institution.
